What is the Book of Kells Experience?
The Book of Kells is an illuminated manuscript of the four Gospels of the New Testament, handwritten and decorated by monks around 800 AD — likely at the monastery of Iona off the Scottish coast, before being moved to Kells in County Meath for safety. It arrived at Trinity College in the 1650s. Two of its four volumes are always on display. The visit includes the Book of Kells exhibition, the Long Room of the Old Library (home to 200,000 of Trinity’s oldest books, with a stunning 65-metre barrel-vaulted oak ceiling), and the new digital exhibition in the Red Pavilion. The full experience takes around 90 minutes.

There are several ways to experience Trinity College. The standard self-guided Book of Kells Experience is the most popular option. You can also add a campus walking tour or book a fully guided Old Library tour.
Option A — Book of Kells Experience (self-guided, includes audio guide)
Includes the Old Library, the Book of Kells, the Long Room and the digital exhibition in the Red Pavilion. This is the standard visit and the one most visitors choose. Duration approximately 90 minutes. From EUR 21.50 per adult.
Option B — Guided Old Library Tour + Book of Kells Experience
A guided group tour of the Old Library with an expert guide (maximum 16 people), followed by self-guided access to the Book of Kells and digital exhibition. From EUR 65 per person.
Option C — Trinity Trails Campus Walking Tour (add-on or standalone)
A 45-minute guided walking tour of Trinity’s historic campus led by student guides. Can be booked as a standalone or combined with the Book of Kells Experience. From EUR 16 per person. Does not include Book of Kells entry on its own.
Option D — Combined Bundle: Trinity Trails + Book of Kells Experience
The ultimate Trinity visit. Campus tour followed by the full Book of Kells Experience. Total duration approximately 2 hours. Best value if you want the full picture.

How Far in Advance Do You Need to Book?
Unlike OPW sites, Trinity College does not operate a fixed advance booking window, tickets are available until slots fill up. In practice, the advice is straightforward:
Off-peak (October to March):
A few days in advance is usually sufficient. Walk-up may occasionally be possible but is not guaranteed.
Shoulder season (April, May, September):
Book at least 3 to 5 days in advance. Slots fill faster than you expect.
Peak season (June, July, August):
Book as soon as your dates are confirmed. Slots sell out days in advance during summer. If you have fixed travel dates, book the moment you book your flights.
Best advice: If you are visiting Dublin in summer, book the Book of Kells before you book anything else. It is that popular.
How to Book — Step by Step
1. Go to the official booking site
Visit visittrinity.ie and select ‘Book Now’. This is the only official booking channel. Concession prices and group rates are only guaranteed through the official site.
2. Choose your ticket type
Decide between the standard self-guided Book of Kells Experience, the guided Old Library Tour, the Trinity Trails campus tour, or a combined bundle. Most visitors choose the self-guided experience as the best balance of value and flexibility.
3. Select your date and time slot
Entry is timed. Choose a slot that suits your wider Dublin itinerary. Morning slots on weekday mornings (especially Tuesday and Wednesday, outside school holidays) are the least crowded. The Book of Kells room itself is small and busy — early entry makes a real difference.
4. Complete payment
Tickets are non-refundable once purchased. Check your date and time carefully before paying. You will receive a confirmation email — present your ticket on your phone or print it.
5. Arrive on time at the Old Library
The starting point is the Old Library building, which you access through Trinity’s main front gate on College Green. Arrive a few minutes before your slot. Your experience begins immediately at your timed entry point.
6. Getting there
Trinity College is in the absolute centre of Dublin — a 10-minute walk from O’Connell Street. Buses 11, 13, 27, 40 and 41 stop within 200 metres. The DART at Pearse Station is a 5-minute walk. The Luas Green Line at St Stephen’s Green is 3 minutes away. Do not drive — there is no campus parking and city centre parking is expensive.
7. What to expect inside
Photography is permitted throughout the Long Room and exhibitions but is strictly prohibited in the room where the Book of Kells itself is displayed. The Long Room is more spacious and relaxed. The digital exhibition in the Red Pavilion is a short walk from the Old Library. Allow a full 90 minutes to see everything without rushing.
