Kilmainham Gaol is one of the most significant historical sites in Ireland and one of the most visited attractions in Dublin. This former prison held thousands of men, women and children over more than a century, including many of the leaders of Ireland’s fight for independence. Pre-booking is not optional, it is essential. This guide tells you exactly how to get in.
What is Kilmainham Gaol?
Kilmainham Gaol was built in 1796 and served as Dublin’s county prison until 1924. It housed political prisoners involved in every major rebellion in Irish history — from the 1798 Rising through to the 1916 Easter Rising and the Civil War. Leaders including Robert Emmet, Charles Stewart Parnell and the commanders of the 1916 Rising were held here.
Several were executed in the Stonebreaker’s Yard. Today it operates as a museum and national monument, managed by the OPW (Office of Public Works). The guided tour is one of the most compelling cultural experiences in Ireland and consistently sells out.

What does a visit include?
All access to Kilmainham Gaol is by guided tour only. There is no self-guided option. The one-hour guided tour takes you through the original west wing, the Victorian east wing with its famous glass ceiling, and the Stonebreaker’s Yard where the 1916 leaders were executed. After the tour, you have free access to the museum and permanent exhibitions.
Note: Ticket holders for the final two tours of the day may visit the museum before their tour begins. Allow extra time if you book a late slot.

How Far in Advance Do You Need to Book?
Tickets are released exactly 28 days in advance at midnight Irish time. This is a hard rule, you cannot book further ahead than 28 days. Slots fill within minutes of release, particularly during summer and school holiday periods.

How to Book — Step by Step
1. Set a reminder 28 days before your visit date
Booking opens at midnight Irish time, exactly 28 days in advance. Set a phone reminder for 11:55 PM the night before your window opens. Have your card details ready to go.
2. Go directly to the official website
Visit kilmainhamgaolmuseum.ie or heritageireland.ie. These are the only legitimate sources. Do not purchase from any third-party site — those tickets will not be accepted at the gate.
3. Select your date, time slot and number of tickets
Each ticket is for a specific date and time. Choose your slot carefully — you cannot transfer or reschedule once booked. If you need to cancel, email within one hour of booking.
4. Book a ticket for everyone, including children under 12
Children under 12 go free but still require a ticket. Every person in your group must have their own booking reference. Groups of 10 or more must contact kilmainhamgaol@opw.ie directly.
5. Arrive 15 minutes before your tour time
Late arrivals may miss the tour. The entrance is at Inchicore Road, Kilmainham, Dublin 8. There is no car parking at the Gaol — use the nearby Irish Museum of Modern Art car park (IMMA) on Military Road, a 5-minute walk away.
6. Getting there without a car
Bus routes 13, 40, 69 and 79 stop near the Gaol. The Luas Red Line stops at Suir Road. It is a 3.5 km (approximately 45-minute) walk from Dublin city centre.
7. What to bring
Dress warmly — the Gaol building is cold even in summer. Comfortable shoes are recommended as the tour involves walking through multiple sections of the building. Photography is permitted in most areas but check with your guide on the day.
